Jazz Auditions for the Stillwater Area HS Jazz Bands are held each year the week before and after Labor Day for the bands the new school year.  AUDITIONS ARE HELD DURING THE DAY AND AFTER SCHOOL. To sign up for an audition, click here. This years auditions will be held on August 31 and  September 1,  7-9 , 2022.

To audition to be considered for placement in the SAHS Jazz Bands, you will need to prepare one of the the following jazz heads (either blues or rhythm changes).  Horn players are encouraged to also play solo over the changes for at least 1 chorus.  Piano, guitar, bass and drums will be asked to play the melody AND the changes.  You will also be asked to sightread.

Audition Material

 Learn one of the blues melodies listed here and play it (2x) with the backing track provided. If you feel comfortable, improvise over the blues changes for the tune you have chosen (at least 1 chorus).  Then play the melody again once to finish the tune.
